And after the first day they were demanding from you to speak in Portuguese where you do not have much vocabulary or any knowledge of what they were teaching you. When you ask them to translate they refuse, when you ask them to explain words in English so you could learn better they refuse. So, I was not in the beginner class. The company just run scam to attract students. Even though I paid $600 for 3 weeks of class, I took only one and I was not satisfied and decided to stop as I found myself being lied to and screwed. I requested the refund from the remaining two weeks of class but the school refuses to provide the refund. Most students there pay week by week basis if they want to continue class. I paid in advance and want to get refund for those two weeks I won't be taking classes with them but they don't budge and refuse to provide refund. I have been taking online group classes here for about a month. The entire class is in Portuguese so you learn super fast. The class sizes are small and after each class the teacher evaluates you, so you learn at your own pace. All the teachers I've had are super enthusiastic and encouraging. The combination of these two factors stands most people in good stead to learn portuguese well and properly. Each factor on their own is normally not sufficient to learn a language systematically. In addition, to language preparation the school has an excellent array of activities on a daily basis with the teachers and other students. These activities range from typical visits to Christ the Redeemer, for example, as well as more cultural and social events like the Festa Nordestina Sao Cristovao. These activites gives you a chance to practice the portuguese learnt in class in an informal environment while getting to know the local area and customs. I would recommend starting your stay in Brazil in the language school and then continuing your experience as you see best. I can´t stress enough the importance and value of language school. However, if you are a foreigner professional and works from 9am to 5pm, you are out of luck because they don't have any group classes in the school after 6pm. Therefore, your only chance is the private business class. However, the curriculum that the school built around me at times felt unclear and that it lacked a structure. For example, in my last class is where we went over the numbers and polite phrases instead of that being the first class haha. I also wish they could offer some discounts. At times I also felt I needed to guide and tailor my own curriculum, otherwise there was no clear or progressive path. The previous class was not building on top of the other one. But I do appreciate that they tried to make an effort to take notes on things that I needed to improve so we can follow up in the next class. I studied here for a couple of weeks and decided to change schools. The School has some positive points such as the staff are friendly, and small groups which are good points. The quality of the teaching varies tremendously depending on which teacher you are assigned. They email you the powerpoint slides, but I find the classes do not have enough exercise to cement your knowledge. Some whizz through the slides and skim over examples which does not give you enough time to soak in the information. This place is ok, but I feel there are other options people should check out as well.

I spent two weeks taking Portuguese courses at the Rio&Learn language school located in Copacabana. Due to only having two weeks in Rio, I decided to take the Immersion classes, which meant I spent 6 hours daily 1:1 with a teacher. The "classes" are structured to help you learn Portuguese in real-world settings. Rather than sitting in a classroom, the school would plan daily activities for me to explore Rio with my teacher and design relevant lesson plans based on that day's activities. To provide a couple examples: one day we went to a street market to learn about the different fruits and vegetables, try the fruits/vegetables, and practice speaking with the vendors; another day we went to the Christ the Redeemer Statue and walked around a park, all while speaking 100% in Portuguese. My primary teacher was Paulo, but I also spent a few days with Ana Paula and Diogo. All three teachers were great, and I enjoyed having a mix of teachers because of their different styles. My time with Rio&Learn was amazing, and I couldn't recommend it enough, especially as a solo traveler. It was like having Portuguese Teachers and Tour Guides all-in-one. Not to mention, I was able to meet other students from all over the world who were also there learning Portuguese. Although I wasn't in their group classes (because I was in my 1:1 Immersion program), I usually joined the groups in the afternoon/evening for additional learning/exploring activities in the city. I have been taking full-time online classes for 8 months now and every teacher is excellent. They do powerpoint display so it's very easy to see and learn, and you learn Portuguese very fast because its not based on memorization. Every teacher is very loving, patient, fun, caring and they all desire to see you succeed to the best of your ability. The atmosphere is always comfortable and fun and you will feel at ease in seconds. The groups are always small and they do pay attention to your learning. The levels are very accurate and they do try their best. A few months ago a mistake was made on my schedule and to show appreciation to me, they gave me a week free of classes. Rio and learn is a school with a great atmosphere. All the of the staff are extremely friendly and it creates an happy environment to have fun, learn and make friends. The materials they use are nicely made and easy to follow and the teachers really bring the materials to life with their energy and enthusiasm! (They also send you copies of the materials via email to keep which is nice) There is also a great social aspect to the school along with learning in real-life situations outside of the classroom. The school arranges really fun activities everyday with their Rio Live programme, which is a really good way to meet people and experience Brazilian culture!

I've had a great experience at Rio & Learn. My level of Portuguese has progressed rapidly due to the small class sizes and emphasis on conversation practice. However, what differentiates Rio & Learn is the level of immersion that comes with the RioLIVE activities. We have the opportunity to practice our Portuguese outside of the classroom and consolidate our learning whilst exploring the city. In the past two weeks I have done beach volleyball, stand-up paddleboarding, samba dancing and other activities. I have made a lot of friends among the staff and other students and would highly recommend Rio & Learn to anyone who wants to learn Portuguese and get to know Rio. :-)
