We had a fantastic time with Mayan outdoors! My kids ages 6&8, my husband, and my dad went on the private 4x4 overnight tour with me and it was an amazing experience! Emilio was an amazing driver and very kind to us! Walter was our guide and took good care of us! The sleeping accommodations were as described with lots of extra blankets in case you are cold. The view of Mount fuego from just in front of our cabin was perfect. The hike from the 4x4 drop off point was reasonable and we had plenty of time. Bring TP and antibacterial hand wash. We brought hand warmers and our own clothes since we wanted to be sure we stayed warm. They had a lot of winter coats to choose from. I used a large hiking backpack from them that was in great condition, the had several to chose from. What an amazing experience!

We joined the 4x4 tour to Acatenango with Mayan Outdoors and it was truly a once in a lifetime experience. Our guides, Walter and Adolfo, were outstanding. They were professional, knowledgeable, kind, and made us feel safe and supported throughout the entire journey. The tour followed the schedule exactly, with pickup at 11 am from the meeting point in Antigua and return the next morning at 10 am. After organizing our gear at the company office, we headed into the beautiful nature reserve and began the hike toward Base Camp. Reaching the camp at 3,550 meters was unforgettable. The views from the camp were breathtaking, with Volcano Agua to the southeast, Acatenango beneath us, and the active Volcano de Fuego right beside it. From the moment we arrived, the experience became surreal. Throughout the afternoon, night, and early morning we witnessed dozens of volcanic eruptions from Volcano de Fuego. As the sky became darker, the red lava lit up the night in a dramatic and unforgettable way. Every ten to fifteen minutes the volcano surprised us again. The Base Camp facilities were excellent. We slept in a clean and well organized cabin shared by six people, with thick mattresses, sleeping bags, and extra blankets. Anyone who is sensitive to cold should bring heat packs, which helped us a lot.
We were also treated to hot chocolate, dinner, and breakfast, which made the experience even better. For those who want to explore more, the guides offer optional hikes from Base Camp for an additional fee. Highly recommended for anyone who has the energy to continue and wants to get even closer to the landscape. We spent the night with a group of sixteen travelers from around the world. It was very cold, but the shared experience, the bonfire, and the view of the volcano created an atmosphere we will never forget. The sunrise the next morning was one of the most beautiful we have ever seen. We returned to Antigua tired but incredibly happy, knowing we had just experienced something truly unique. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Guatemala.

Absolutely loved my experience with Mayan outdoors for the 4x4 overnight Acatenango tour as a solo traveler! If you want to see stunning Fuego eruptions without the grueling hike to the Acatenango base camp, this really is the perfect way to do so. The hike from the 4x4 drop-off to base camp is only about 45 minutes and easily manageable for most people. Our guides, Daniel, Brian and Walter were amazing. My deepest gratitude to Daniel for his encouragement and support during the additional Fuego hike, which I found to be extremely challenging. I was quite slow and honestly not in great shape (attempting this hike was probably a mistake on my part), and I likely added a couple of hours to the trip. Daniel’s patience and kindness truly meant a lot —thank you once again. Tips for anyone planning this trip: 1. Read and follow the instructions sent in advance. 2. Wear good hiking shoes - it makes a difference 3. Dress in layers: the hike can get warm, but base camp is very cold at night. Make sure the jacket you choose is warm enough 5. Bring wet wipes and hand sanitizer, and please wipe the seat before and after each use for everyone’s sake. 6. Do not expect luxury accommodations. The cabin was solid and comfortable for me, accommodating 6-8 people. The bathroom was not the cleanest, which was expected given the remote location and shared setting. 7. If you want a good spot in the cabin next to the window choose early :). 8. Re-consider doing the Fuego hike unless you are in decent shape. It can be very challenging, the weather can be unpredictable (it was somewhat cloudy and extremely windy by the time we reached the top), you might significantly slow down the group and the guides (who are tired as well given they often do this hike daily during dry season), and the views from the base camp is already stunning. In addition, although this hike is often marketed as a 3-hour, medium-difficulty hike, a quick search shows it can easily take anywhere from 3 to 6 hours depending on your fitness level and the crowd on that day. 9. If doing the Fuego hike, bring something to cover your eyes and nose with, just in case it ends up being windy at the summit. Also ideally, ensure there are two guides—one for faster hikers and one for slower ones—unless you’re comfortable either slowing others down or waiting for long periods. 10. Communicate your needs clearly. You are ultimately responsible for your own safety. If your headlamp dims or you need to slow down, speak up 11. Tip the guides generously and leave a review if you can. They put in an incredible amount of effort, often hiking daily throughout the dry season, and truly deserve recognition. Most importantly—have fun. Being able to experience this tour is an immense blessing. And if you make mistakes along the way, as I did, treat them as learning experiences. Seeing a live volcano in action up close is nothing short of extraordinary. Mayan Tours was a fantastic company to work with, and I am very glad I chose them. The guides also spoke highly of the company, which matters to me—I would like to support an organization that takes good care of its staff.

Best Trek + Best Guide = Good Times I had the most memorable trip to Acatenango and el Fuego! My guide Oscar was such a pleasure to be around and made the experience more meaningful! He made sure all our needs were met and also provided a lot of insight about the volcanoes and plant life in the area. His English is excellent and made me feel more comfortable speaking and asking questions. Best time ever!

Experience 20/10 An amazing experience, we went up in 4x4, the base where the cars leave us is super close to the camp where we spent the night, we were with the guides Walter and Adolfo, they were amazing, walter made us delicious food and was very attentive to everything, Adolfo took us up the volcano of fire and made all the difference because he had all the patience in the world to be able to go at our pace without risking health, we totally recommend them. It is important to say that the campsite is one of the best located considering the routes from the base of the cars, fire or top.

Great trip! Once in a lifetime trip. Guides were super helpful as we were a group of old guys and they helped us along and didn’t rush.Loaned us gear without cost. Good food. Great location to see Fuego. Luckily clear so great photos. We were tired out so didn’t organize the beds so I slept on the plywood floor without mat so pretty hard. Bring your own pad and fleece blanket.

A difficult hike with breathtaking views Our family recently took the acatenango hike tour with Mayan outdoors though Tikal go. Our tour guide was Daniel , he was very good helping and encouraging us throughout the whole difficult hike on Dec 31st 2025 and Jan 1st 2026. He is also very warm hearted and helped another tourist who got lost. I highly recommend Daniel as the tour guide.

Do not hesitate to book with this company!!!!:) We did the Sunset tour and did not stay overnight at the base camp. The whole experience itself was absolutely amazing and do not hesitate to book with this company. It was such an authentic experience as well did not feel rushed, and the crew really gives you time to relax and enjoy the base camp before continuing hike to sunset spot where you really get to soak in the peace as you wait for the sunset and start to see Fuego erupt. The 4x4 was a lot of fun going up to start the hike listening to music, but not much fun going down after eating a large portion of spaghetti and multiple hot chocolates I did experience some nausea but that was just me because the windows could not be down in the dark because of it being cold out so there was not much air flow. Just a few suggestions and comments. The company supplies you with coats and a variety to choose from pick a warm coat it definitely gets cold later on at night. Bring your own hat and gloves. They offer hats/beanies; however, I do not know how often hats are washed probably best to allow people to bring and wear their own. We were not supplied gloves so just bring your own in a small trail backpack and bring water and your own snacks for base camp. They do provide you dinner of a good portion of spaghetti that was actually quite delicious and the most amazing hot chocolate! The website for the sunset tour states that you return 8pm but you do not even leave the base camp till 730-8pm so return is actually closer to 10pm if staying in Antigua. It is a least a 35 minute hike back to 4x4 from base camp and then another 45 minutes for 4x4 to get down and out of park entrance, then you still have to drop off coats and be brought back to Antigua so do not plan to be doing much afterwards because the whole experience is about an 11 hour tour from pickup to drop off. Was still an incredible experience and would totally recommend Mayan Outdoors for your Volcano hiking tour.

Very friendly and competent guides The company can’t help the incredibly beautiful volcanic experience, so this is all about the quality of Mayan Outdoors. Everyone is friendly, binding, reliable - they know what they are doing. How the guides hold their respective sheep together in the hustle and bustle of the simultaneously ascending and descending to the saddle in front of El Fuego, even in darkness: Respect!

Amazing experience Anton our driver did a great job getting up the path even though it wasn’t for the faint of heart. Walter our guide was available for anything we needed. We all decided to skip the extra hikes and stay at camp to enjoy the views. It was cold but there were enough blankets and sleeping bags to stay warm. The food was hearty and tasty. The hot chocolate and coffee were warm treats. Highly recommend!
