Let me start by saying I have Lupus. It does not define me, but it does limit my physical activity at times. Not all yoga instructors meet me where I am. And it’s different on any given day.
Alicia has a rare ability to meet me exactly where I am. Whether I arrive feeling strong and energized or depleted and overwhelmed, she intuitively guides me in a way that feels both supportive and empowering. Her cues are clear, her sequencing is thoughtful, and her presence is calm without ever being passive. She holds space with strength and kindness.
What I especially appreciate is how Alicia weaves breath, mindfulness, and subtle emotional awareness into the practice. It’s never performative. It’s authentic. I leave not just stretched, but steadied. Not just stronger, but more connected to my body.
Being a yoga novice, I sometimes say to myself, Alicia, you want me to do what now? But she gently helps me work into whatever position that works in my case, even while all around me look like human pretzels and I’m a bit intimidated!
She creates a community in the room without forcing it. There is warmth, but also respect. Depth, but also lightness. You can tell she lives what she teaches.
If you have the opportunity to take a class with Alicia Ray, do. Your body will thank you. And so will your nervous system. And those people who have to deal with you when you are not feeling your best. My husband, Scott, who also takes classes with Alicia, told me to add that last part!
