There are dog walking services and then there is Bethesda Dog Walkers, and their incredible staff like David and Sarah. My sweet Pepper is, unfortunately, a nervous dog. She is the biggest lovebug to me, but that is a side few ever see because she is so uncomfortable around other people, other dogs, and, well the world really. It is a tragedy that people don’t get to see her like I see her.
Sarah and David have managed to do something I didn’t think was possible—make Pepper feel comfortable like I do; make her feel safe like I do; and in so doing get to see her like I do. That is just how good they are with Pepper (and I am sure the other dogs people entrust to them as well).
There are so many examples I could point to from the little things like the adorable updates and photos they send through on their walks, to even just sitting with Pepper in the shade watching the world pass by (a favorite past time of Pepper’s). The one that sticks out in my mind the most is how Sarah stayed with Pepper in the middle of a rather nasty thunderstorm recently, keeping her company during the ‘walk’ while Pepper shook in fear, hiding in the bathroom. The walk was rained out, but Sarah stayed with her, soothing her, making her feel safe as the thunder crashed and the lightning flashed. She even stayed after the walk was nominally over to see Pepper through the worst of the storm.
Pepper is my world; she’s not just a pet, she is family. Sarah, David, and Bethesda Dog Walkers understand that, believe it, and practice it—they treat Pepper like family, like she is their own. The peace of mind that that gives me is something on which I cannot put a price. That Pepper feels comfortable with them and is even excited to see them—my nervous sweetheart of a dog who still barks at my own parents after all these years, is excited to see them, bounding off the couch to greet them when they come to take her out, and that is priceless.
