Dr. Varma and his team are absolutely exceptional - I can't say enough great things to describe my experience and results! I've had various degrees of lower back and sciatica pain for about 20 years with a number of doctors recommending either a fusion of L4/L5 and L5/S1 or disc replacements. The last month before my surgery with Dr Varma, I was in excruciating pain - essentially laying on the floor, not being able to walk much, taking all sorts of drugs that didn't work, and screaming due to pain. I made an appointment to see Dr. Varma with my wife after having researched "best spine doctors/surgeons in NYC" and reading all his amazing reviews on various sites. On my first visit he literally spent one full hour with us in the room discussing the basics, answering all our questions in depth, reviewing MRIs, X-Rays, and all sorts of reports I brought in detail before discussing symptoms and my various options. And then he recommended a discectomy (a minimally invasive surgical procedure that removes a damaged or herniated portion of a spinal disc to relieve pressure on spinal nerve roots) - nobody else recommended that option before and I absolutely loved that recommendation because it's less invasive than a fusion or disc replacement but still gives me the option to do either of them down the road, if needed. Dr. Varma has a very full schedule but his team squeezed me in right-away due to the level of pain I was in. Christine and the rest of Dr. Varma's team was extremely personal, kind, proactive, solution-oriented, and professional - everything went smoothly. On the day of surgery, at the hospital, it was no different. And, most importantly, I woke up from surgery without any pain whatsoever and walked out of the hospital 5 hours later. Absolutely incredible! It's clearly evident that Dr. Varma is not only extremely knowledgeable and skillful in his craft but super passionate about it. If you need another opinion or are far enough down the road looking for a surgeon, you're in excellent hands with Dr. Varma and his team!

My appointment with Dr Vikas Varma on Aug 10 was so informative. He is the first doctor who discussed the sideways curvature in my spine. Other doctors sent me to physical therapy, which was helpful in general ways, but it wasn't specifically addressing the need to straighten my backbone in any way that Dr Varma made clear that the therapy could apply to. This might bring me physical peace with less pain, and hopefully I'll be standing straighter. I'm so glad that Dr Varma focused on the curvature ad that the physical therapy will work on that also! Dr. Varma was needed to address pain in my wife's lower back resulting from spinal reconstructive surgery that had been done by a different surgeon two years ago. He spent much time examining X-rays, CT scans & MRI scans. He referred my wife for pain therapy in an effort to avoid surgery. Dr. Varma did everything that he could to avoid doing any surgery at all, which what a good surgeon should do. When pain management seemed to hit a dead end, he sent my wife back for one last pain management session to pinpoint the source of the pain. Instead of re-building the entirety of the spinal construction from two years ago, Dr. Varma targeted a very small area so as to minimize what needed to be done. And when he did do the surgery, he did so with great confidence of success. And the surgery went well. Although my wife was planning for a 2 or 3 day hospital stay, she was discharged on the day of surgery. The incision healed quickly. Before the surgery was done, my wife experienced pain in 3 different places. She now has no pain at all in 2 of them. The third area is still pain-full when she sits for too long or lies in bed in the wrong position. This pain has been diminishing steadily.

I’ve been suffering with sciatica on and off for two years, but this year, the pain has impacted everything in my life. I’ve been miserable and depressed for quite some time, just have not felt like myself. I’ve tried everything to get rid of this pain. I’ve seen a physical therapist, I’ve tried a chiropractor (who I believe made it worst), and did the epidural shots. My pain management doctor referred me to Dr. Varma, she ensured me that he would take great care of me…and that he did. Met him for a visit and instantly he knew what was wrong, laid out my options for me to choose from, and steered me in the right direction. Now here I am, a little over a week post-op and I feel great. I haven’t slept this good in months. I can actually move around without this nagging pain shooting down my leg. I can’t thank this man enough and I am greatly appreciative for the work that he and his team has given me!

Dr. Varma explained the details of my case using my MRI results to show me where my problem area is, and he also offered me a couple of alternatives to surgery. I'm now implementing the first of these and have scheduled another appointment with him in six weeks.

Went in with excruciating pain in my lower back and legs. I was seen promptly and referred to a pain management specialist who addressed my pain and offered me immediate relief.

Friendly staff, short waiting period. Dr. Varma listens to you, and talks to you. He seems like he tells it to you straight. All in all, one of the better experiences I've had in a doctor's office.

Dr. Varma is very caring. He actually listens. He is a gifted and caring surgeon. He is very attentive and we feel lucky to have found him.

I was diagnosed with stenosis. Dr. Varma was recommended by one of my chiropractors as an innovative back surgeon who really listens to his patients. Before coming to see him, I had tried chiropractic, massage, yoga, supplements and medication. I was in a lot of pain, and at first Dr. Varma sent me to Pain Management, where I received cortisone shots. They did not work, so I returned to Dr. Varma. I could barely walk into his office. He explained how he proposed to fix my back in the least invasive way possible. I had a spinal fusion. My back is now held together, amazingly, with titanium baskets and screws! It is now 3 months after surgery, and I can walk over a mile. I was released from the hospital less than 24 hours after the surgery was performed! I started Physical Therapy 2 weeks later. I highly recommend Dr. Varma and his team.

I always thought they have some use but I objected to it not being recognized as a medicine , requiring a prescription etc. I received an ad on the computer for the CBD oil capsules minus the hemp. They offered a free bottle , just the cost of shipping. Out of desperation I ordered a bottle. This is the fourth day and there is definitely an improvement in my condition. It should still be available only BY PRESCRIPTION.

Dr. Varma spent 45 minutes with my husband and I, answering all our questions patiently and thoroughly. We are grateful for his analysis of my condition and his sound advice.

Dr. Varma was thorough in his examination of my neck pain. He listened to my symptoms, tested my range of motion, sent me for super quick x-rays (and I didn’t have to wait 15 min after the x-rays, he came right back into the room!) and explained the potential causes of my pain as well as potential solutions. Yes I waited about 45 min post-appointment time to see him, but he squeezed me in the same day, and it’s Manhattan... that stuff is pretty normal and isn’t really a function of his fault but more of the facility managing appointments a little better. The only thing I could have suggested to him was to review my x ray results with me (I assume they showed nothing, but I still would have liked to know). Side note, he’s easy on the eyes so that doesn’t hurt!! Feel comfortable and confident that Dr. Varma will take good care of you and wants you to be symptom-free ASAP. I was very pleased!
